Last resort, founded by two friends from Sweden
Last Resort AB are easily one of the most exciting skate shoe companies out at the moment. Perhaps because the creators of Last Resort, Sami Tolppi and Pontus Alv, share an incredible passion for footwear, and after a phone call together in 2019 they decided they could make some waves in the skate shoe industry with their combined vision for Last Resort. Another super exciting aspect of the brand is that they are still an incredibly young brand, having only entered the market in 2020, and proudly did so without any corporate financial backing, meaning they have no one to answer to when designing their shoes. A rare treat for all of those involved.
So who are Sami Tolppi and Pontus Alv? Both were born in Sweden, with Pontus in Malmö and Sami in Stockholm. Although Google Maps shows a 300+ mile gap between the two cities, both knew and skated with each other as kids in the '90s.
As you may know, Pontus quickly found himself skating outside of Sweden and making a name for himself as a pro for brands such as Emerica and Cliché. He eventually went on to start another highly-respected board company, Polar Skate Co.
Sami, although a very talented skater didn't quite make it as a sponsored skater, and instead found himself focusing on shoe and clothing design. After a solid stint as a designer at Swedish apparel company WeSC, Sami started Last Resort (originally named 3-3-20) in 2018 as a high-fashion sneaker company, sold almost exclusively in Japan. Then in 2019, as mentioned earlier, one fateful phone call brought the two Swedes back together with the collective goal of putting a bit of a spark back into the, in their opinion, stale skate shoe market.
When asked why the two of them started Last Resort, Pontus makes it very clear, stating:
“The past years or so when I look out at the so-called skate shoe landscape there is something about it that feels off & weird these huge corporations running things their way... It's a feeling and like I said above if you are unhappy with a situation shut up and do something about it...”
Technical shoes with a classic aesthetic
This rejection of large corporations within skateboarding is very much a huge driving force behind Last Resort. With some large sports companies bullying their way into the skate shoe market over the past 15 years or so and steering the 'landscape' as Pontus puts it, towards a dangerous situation of the skate shoe market is in the hands of people who have no idea what it is to be a skateboarder.
In response to this, Last Resort has entered the skate shoe market in an attempt to not only increase the availability of styles on skate shop's shelves, but also the control skateboarders have over the shoes they wear. Moving away from logo-driven designs and instead focussing on the performance of the shoes that have a classic yet understated aesthetic. This is achieved by using high-end insoles, sole treads designed to not collect gravel that could mess up your grip tape and materials intensely tested to ensure they are as durable as possible.
These ideals also trickle down into Last Resort's skate team. With riders such as Chris 'Mango' Milic, Dane Brady and Jesse Alba on the roster, you can see the vibe Last Resort is going for.
Skateboarding sometimes feels as though it is just permanently chasing the heaviest or most technical tricks you can do, and on the face of it, there is nothing inherently wrong with that. However, this tunnel vision does then begin to ignore the more creative side of things, thus halting any chance of kids that look up to the likes of Louie Barletta, Jason Adams or Chris Milic, for example, making it in the industry. Last Resort is a vital member of the skate shoe industry already, purely due to their ethos, the fact that their shoes skate amazing and look great is, of course, a lovely bonus too.
