Billabong, one of the original surf brands

Before starting Billabong with his then-partner Rena, Gordon Merchant was obsessed with surfing, as most surfers are. But Gordan’s passion went beyond the act of surfing, with a drive to create and improve surf products that better the sport for everyone. In fact, Gordon helped shape one of the first surfboards with a tucked-under edge and also created the very first leg-rope, also known as a leash. This passion to create new and purposeful products then turned Gordan and Rena onto fabricating some of the most well-made board shorts at the time, using a bespoke and super durable triple-stitch technique. These original models of boardshorts were sold for A$4.50 and quickly became a high-demand pair of shorts.

Billabong’s successful entry into the surf apparel world was, of course, partly down to the incredibly well-made, yet affordable boardshorts they began creating in the ‘70s. However, another major factor was their support of surf events around the coasts of Australia. These Billabong-sponsored events really drove the brand awareness of the company through the roof, quickly solidifying Billabong as a true surfing brand and helping it grow into a global force within surfing.

Becoming such a highly respected brand gave Billabong opportunities to sponsor some of the most treasured names in surfing throughout its time. With names such as Andy Irons, Mark Occhilupo, and Taj Burrow having been on their team, you can see how Billabong managed to maintain such a huge following over the years. Not only that, when you compare the general ethos of Billabong to other surf brands that possess a super clean-cut vibe, Billabong maintains its authenticity with a much more laid-back approach to the brand and team. Don’t worry, though, this isn’t to say Billabong takes a nonchalant approach to the quality of their products. Their clothing, although it oozes a laid-back style, consists of high-quality and eco-friendly designs – from their T-shirts all the way over to their wetsuits.
